Additional resources and reports on partner and sexual violence in Rainbow communities

Hohou Te Rongo Kahukura – Outing Violence has published additional fact sheets and summary reports from their research about violence in Rainbow communities.

The project asked people from the Rainbow community about partner and sexual violence in Aotearoa New Zealand through a survey and community hui.

A comprehensive report (including recommendations) was published in 2016, Building Rainbow communities free of partner and sexual violence.

Based on this research, Hohou Te Rongo Kahukura – Outing Violence has published additional resources including: four new fact sheets, a power and control wheel specific to Rainbow communities, and three new summary reports.

The factsheets are:

• Factsheet 2: Sexual Violence
• Factsheet 3: Impacts and Asking for Help
• Factsheet 4: Who Answered Our Survey? 

The new reports looked at experiences of violence for specific groups within the Rainbow community, in response to requests:

• Trans and Gender Diverse People
• Disabled Sex, Sexuality and Gender Diverse People
• Bisexual and Pansexual People

Project manager Sandra Dickson said:

"Because these are all groups who experience multiple kinds of marginalisation, the rates of violence are high, and it's also clear that existing services are not yet meeting these groups' needs in particular."

The Ministry of Education released new guidelines to help support the inclusion, safety and wellbeing of LGBTIQA+ students. The guidelines are designed to help school leaders and teachers create a positive learning environment for all students. The guidelines cover: understanding sex, gender and sexuality diversity; creating a school culture where all students are included, visible and valued; addressing immediate environmental, physical and social needs of students; and creating an inclusive classroom that supports all students to achieve.
