Welcome to our Quick Reads format. Each week we share selected news bites relevant to family violence and sexual violence in Aotearoa.

Human Rights Commission releases report on AI and human rights

Te Kāhui Tika Tangata | Human Rights Commission has released AI and Digital Technologies: A Human Rights and Te Tiriti o Waitangi Approach (2026). The report outlines how Aotearoa can harness the benefits of emerging technologies while protecting people's rights and freedoms through a human rights and te Tiriti-based approach. It suggests New Zealand’s existing legislative infrastructure already provides a strong foundation for AI governance and accountability. For an overview, see the Commission’s media release.

Netsafe release new report on generative AI and young people

Netsafe has published Generative AI and young people in Aotearoa New Zealand (2026). This report draws on international and local research, frontline youth stakeholder feedback, and a national youth survey with 1,202 young people to improve understanding of:

• how young people are using generative AI
• what risks and harms they are encountering
• how they can best be supported to navigate it safely.

InsideOUT resource ‘Legal Rights at School’ updated

InsideOUT Kōaro have updated their free resource, Legal Rights at School. The resource provides an overview of the legal rights of rainbow youth at school, covering issues that might affect individuals and also queer straight alliance/rainbow diversity groups.

New toolkit for transgender inclusion in community sports released

Ngā Wāhine Hākinakina o Aotearoa | Women in Sport Aotearoa (WISPA) and InsideOut Kōaro have released the Transgender Inclusion in Community Sport Toolkit. This is a free resource for national, regional and local sports organisations, clubs, teams and competitions. Drawing on research, lived experience and case studies from the Aotearoa sports sector, this toolkit aims to help sports organisations create welcoming spaces for transgender, non-binary and gender diverse people. UN call for inputs on child rights and safety in the digital environment

The Office of the United Nations Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has issued a call for inputs on child rights and safety in the digital environment to inform its upcoming report. The report aims to assess risks to children’s safety in the digital environment and best practices to address these risks in different geographical areas. 2025 Transparency Report: Digital Violent Extremism released

Te Tari Taiwhenua | Department of Internal Affairs have released their 2025 Transparency Report: Digital Violent Extremism (2026), which provides an overview of online terrorist and violent extremist content (TVEC) in Aotearoa. It also highlights their prevention and education work, their international collaboration, and the violent extremism-related media queries and Official Information Act requests they have received.

New Victims Information website launched by Ministry of Justice

Te Tāhū o te Ture | Ministry of Justice has relaunched the Victims Information website. With improved navigation and search function and new content, the refreshed website makes it easier to find reliable information about types of crime, victims’ rights, support services, and criminal justice processes. The Ministry has said they will continue working with agencies and organisations to keep the site reliable, consistent, and up to date.
