New report on ethnic and migrant women’s experience of family court following disclosures of family violence
Shama has released a new report: Navigating safety and justice in Aotearoa New Zealand: ethnic and migrant women’s experiences before, during and after the Family Court following disclosure of family violence (2026). The report explores how ethnic and migrant women experience New Zealand’s justice system when seeking help for family or sexual violence, with a particular focus on the Family Court. The study highlights barriers, challenges, and opportunities for improving access, safety, and fairness for ethnic women navigating court processes.
Consultation open on the Drug Overdose (Assistance Protection) Legislation Bill
The Health Select Committee is calling for submissions on the Drug Overdose (Assistance Protection) Legislation Bill. This Bill is intended to reduce barriers to calling for life-saving assistance and to help prevent avoidable overdose deaths. It provides protection from prosecution for specified low-level drug offences for people seeking urgent medical assistance in the event of an adverse drug reaction or overdose. These protections would apply to the person seeking help, the person experiencing the overdose or adverse reaction, and others incidentally present at the scene. It also protects parolees who have conditions on drug use. Information on how to make a submission is available at the link above. Consultation closes Tuesday 16 June 2026.
ACC releases ‘Little Matters’, child sexual abuse prevention resource
ACC has released Little Matters, a resource to help prevent child sexual abuse. The resource is designed to help families take small, achievable actions daily that help build clarity, respect and connection. The resource contains 10 Little Matters that families can incorporate into their daily lives, including not keeping secrets, using real words to describe the body, and learning one’s feelings. New report from the New Zealand Crime and Victims Survey (NZCVS)
Te Tāhū o te Ture | Ministry of Justice has released NZCVS Key Stories 2025 (Cycle 8) (2026). The report highlights findings from Cycle 8 of the New Zealand Crime and Victim Survey, including findings related to family violence. It describes trends for key offence types and perceptions of the justice system by demographic groups. See more from the NZCVS.
New UN Women report on online violence against women
UN Women have published Tipping point: Online violence impacts, manifestations, and redress in the AI age (2026), the second instalment in their Tipping Point series. This report examines how online violence against women in public life is becoming more technologically sophisticated, more invasive, and more damaging in the age of artificial intelligence. Report evaluates safety of social media platforms for LGBTQ users
GLAAD, the world’s largest LGBTQ media advocacy organisation, has released its sixth annual Social Media Safety Index (2026). The Social Media Safety Index evaluates public-facing policies related to LGBTQ safety, privacy, and expression across six major social media platforms: TikTok, YouTube, X, and Meta’s Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.
