Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is one of the most common neurodevelopment disorders, but most people who have it are undiagnosed or have been misdiagnosed. Many social service providers may already be supporting individuals and whānau affected by FASD, without realising it.
This introductory session, led by two kaimahi from FASD-CAN, will help build understanding of FASD as a brain-based disability, and explore how it can present in everyday practice. It will highlight why awareness, appropriate support and practical accommodations are essential to improving outcomes for people with FASD and their families.
As well as providing an overview of diagnosis, the brain domains affected and co-morbidities with other neurodiversities, the session will look at the consequences of lack of support in the education, mental health and justice systems.
FASD-CAN is an NGO providing support to those with FASD and their whanau. It provides professional development and training on FASD and networking for social service providers.
Both presenters have caregiver experience of supporting those with FASD and will draw on this lived experience in their presentation.
