About the event

This interactive workshop introduces people to the dynamics underlying violence against disabled people. Participants will examine:

  • language used about disabled people
  • a history that contextualises violence against disabled people in Aotearoa
  • forms of violence against disabled people
  • barriers to disclosure
  • what a service requires to be fully accessible
  • some general ideas for working with disabled clients.

The facilitator, Dr. Debbie Hager, is a public health researcher and activist with a focus on men’s violence against women, violence against disabled people, and the intersections between violence, substance abuse and mental distress.  Her teaching and research work explores the gender/violence impacts of intersectional hegemonic privilege, and how to use policy to advance equity and empowerment for marginalised populations.
